Wavehunters started in 2003 with a minibus delivering clients for surf lessons to different beaches. The year after we opened our surf school on Polzeath beach and it was to become the centre of our tiny empire!
Our ethos at the surf school has always been that everyone has to start from somewhere. So we aim to make the process as fun as possible and, yep, you will fall off and it will be frustrating but give us 2 hours of your time and we will help you on your way to surfing freedom.
Our lessons proved popular and we grew from a small surf school in to one of the biggest in the UK. An early realisation was that many members of our local community hadn't had the opportunity to discover surfing and we were mainly teaching holiday makers. Therefore we also set about actively getting locals in to the water through clubs and school programs. Our program worked, so much so, that many of the kids we taught through these programs have come out the other side as instructors. Two of our current instructors have even won English and Welsh titles!
While the surf school was growing we opened our first small shop in our home town of Port Isaac. It was primarily a retail outlet, but in the early days it was an office, a store, and many of our staff have actually lived above the shop!
The next step at the beach was to open our hire outlets providing equipment right on the beach. This was quickly followed by our Stand Up Paddleboard School and Hire Centre.
In 2013 we opened our marine section that has a 9 meter Powerboat. The plan was to give our customers another way that they could enjoy our epic coastline. It has been a huge success and we have now opened a further booking centre in Padstow that also works as a shop and Cafe in Padstow.
We are a small crew of 5 full time staff and up to 35 part time staff in the summer, many of whom have worked with us since the beginning.
It’s not always been the easiest road but we love what we do and hope that shows through in everything we do.
